Hugging Face is looking for a Low-level Senior Software Engineer to join the Xet Storage team and help build and operate the storage infrastructure behind the Hugging Face platform. The Xet architecture stores more than 200PB of machine learning and AI assets and supports models, datasets, and applications used by millions of developers and researchers.

You will work across the open-source Xet project, written in Rust, and the Xet Storage backend, designing and implementing high-performance, scalable infrastructure. This role is suited to an engineer passionate about low-level systems programming, distributed systems, storage, networking, and operating production infrastructure at enormous scale in a fully remote, high-trust environment.

• Design, build, and operate scalable storage infrastructure powering the Hugging Face platform.
• Contribute to the open-source Xet project written in Rust.
• Develop high-performance features for the Xet Storage backend.
• Build reliable, fault-tolerant distributed systems capable of operating at massive scale.
• Work on low-level systems software and performance-critical infrastructure.
• Monitor and operate production systems, including alerting, distributed debugging, and recovery.
• Contribute to infrastructure architecture and technical decisions across the broader Infrastructure organization.
• Work independently and take end-to-end ownership of complex technical challenges.
• Collaborate asynchronously with a distributed engineering team in a high-trust, low-process environment.
• Leverage modern AI development tools and workflows to accelerate engineering productivity.

• 8+ years of experience building and scaling distributed systems, storage, or networking infrastructure.
• Strong proficiency in a low-level systems programming language, with Rust strongly preferred.
• Experience with production systems software and large-scale infrastructure.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership in an ambiguous, high-trust environment.
• Comfort working in a fast-moving, asynchronous, fully remote organization.
• Strong interest in building simple, robust, scalable systems used by engineering and research teams.
• Nice to have: Experience designing high-performance, fault-tolerant storage and data retrieval systems.
• Nice to have: Production operations experience including monitoring, alerting, distributed debugging, and recovery.
• Nice to have: Familiarity with Git internals.
• Nice to have: Experience with AWS, Azure, GCP, or Kubernetes.
